N2 - The objective of this study is to determine the impact of institutional variables on environmental degradation in sixteen Latin American countries, measured by CO2 emissions and the change in the Ecological Footprint (EF), using the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) approach. Country panel data over the period 2002-2014 are used. The results confirm the EKC hypothesis when using CO2 emissions, and for the case of the HE it is verified only when institutional variables are introduced as a synthetic indicator. According to both models, we are far from the tipping point
