Resumen
Orthodontic treatment must include both functional and
aesthetic parameters to establish balance in the stomatognathic system, despite this, in
many cases these criterions are not taken into consideration producing alterations at
masticatory level. To achieve stability, the treatments must establish an anterior guidance
which protects posterior teeth in eccentric movements, thus avoiding, contacts that can have
repercussions at teeth’s level, periodontium, temporomandibular joint and oral muscles. This
article aims to make known the importance of the anterior guidance in orthodontics and the
consequence of avoiding this fundamental parameter of occlusion. The following literature
review was carried out by a bibliographic compilation of different studies related to
occlusion and function of the anterior guidance, in addition to possible consequences of its
absence. It is concluded that without analyzing each factor during the functional movements
of the TMJ, will not obtain the desired objectives proposed by the clinical treatment.
