Resumen
The family and its functioning are of great importance in the life of all human beings; his study is
particularly important for young mothers due to own them because they incorporate features and a
new being in the family in a changing world. The research raised the problem through the question:
What is the functioning of families of mothers under 21 who gave birth at the Hospital Vicente Corral
Cuenca-Ecuador, in 2013? The target was characterize the functioning of families of mothers under 21
who gave birth in the hospital. Methods: descriptive study; population: women under age 21 in their first postpartum week and interned in the service of obstetrics and gynecology Hospital Vicente Corral Cuenca-Ecuador. Through interview on family functioning test (FF-sil) applies. Results: 878 women entered the study of 12-20 years, mean age 18.5 years, SD ± 1.7; their families had cohesion, communication, affection and taking very good roles; family harmony pretty good; adaptability and less favorable permeability. All variables and situations assessed by the FF-sil test were associated with family functioning (p 0.000). Conclusion: functional families prevailed.
