N2 - This research has a qualitative approach with an exploratory and application scope, and has
tried to solve problems in the interior space of multipurpose classrooms in a public child care center in the
city of Cuenca, by designing them with low-cost materials, in order to enhance their use. The methodology
used was based on a bibliographic analysis of the main materials to be used, and the most common were
selected as the basis for the proposals. We worked with the students of the last cycles of the Interior Design
Degree of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Cuenca to gather information. Subsequently the students
carried out interviews with users, architectural survey sheets, observation sheets in which they discovered
the main problems related to interior design. Using the data collected, teachers and students worked together to propose formal, functional and constructive solutions to the multipurpose spaces. In these proposals, priority was given to the use of common and low-cost materials. The draft project was approved by the users based on their needs and experiences in the use of furniture and space. This phase was motivating to start with the management of materials to private companies, the last step was the socialization of the
proposals by the students towards the users. At the end of the project, it was possible to see that interior
design can solve problems of comfort and use of spaces that are not suitable for low-cost materials, that the development of the activities to be carried out can be improved and that the spaces can once again be
potentially useful within the beneficiary community.
