Resumen

The last census carried out in Ecuador in 2010 indicates that there are 212934 adobe houses and because of the geographical location of the country with respect to the Pacific Ring of Fire, it characterizes it in a territory of high seismicity, being an opportunity to develop investigations of traditional adobes and possible improvements, for the conservation and maintenance of patrimonial structures. The research focuses on comparing traditional adobes and internally reinforced adobes with fiberglass rods, for which an adobe was selected located in Cuenca - Ecuador - sector San José de Balzay, the same one that provided all the material for the study. Through physical tests, the soil was studied as the main constituent of the adobes, submitting to 10 field trials and the results were concatenated with 4 laboratory tests; After the land was characterized, 510 bricks were made, which were used to make 150 samples, performing mechanical tests of: compression bricks, flex adobes, compressed adobe piles and diagonal compression brick walls, the Ecuadorian Construction Standard was adopted NEC and Peruvian Standard E.080 for the tests. In the results, the traditional adobe was always compared to the adobe reinforced internally with fiberglass, obtaining that: the adobes including fiberglass are: 25% more resistant to compression, have a 514% more capacity to flex, are 30% more resistant the adobe compression piles and are 68% more resistant the walls of adobes to diagonal compression, that is to say, there is an increase in the rupture load of the reinforced adobe with respect to the traditional adobe, being important to highlight the different forms of placement of the fiberglass rods in search of improvements in the resistant capacity of the material.
