Abstract
The growing complexity of tourism activity, shaped by globalisation, digital transformation, and sustainability demands, has driven the development of Tourism Intelligence Systems (TIS). Unlike traditional observatories, which focus on descriptive monitoring, TIS are conceived as proactive infrastructures capable of integrating heterogeneous data sources, advanced technologies, and collaborative governance processes to generate actionable knowledge. This chapter provides a comprehensive analysis of the rationale, conceptual foundations, key components, and typologies of TIS, as well as their critical success factors and associated risks. These systems are highlighted for their ability to transform large volumes of structured and unstructured data into strategic information to support decision-making at strategic, tactical, and operational levels. TIS contribute not only to competitiveness and innovation but also to sustainability and resilience, aligning with the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The analysed cases demonstrate that their effectiveness depends on elements such as institutional leadership, interoperability, analytical capabilities, transparency, and multi-stakeholder collaboration. However, risks are also identified, including data source fragmentation, technological gaps, underutiliation of generated intelligence, and dependence on external platforms.
