Abstract
Tourism intelligence has emerged as a key field for the sustainable and competitive management of destinations in a context defined by digitalisation, demand volatility, and growing pressure to reduce externalities. This chapter examines the conceptual and operational foundations of tourism intelligence, highlighting its ability to transform dispersed data into actionable knowledge that informs strategic decision-making. Building on the evolution from information systems and observatories towards integrated destination intelligence models, it analyses the essential components (data, technology, people, and processes) and the dimensions that ensure their effectiveness: systemic, strategic, technological, participatory, and ethical. The chapter also reviews the associated benefits, which range from optimising visitor flows and enhancing the tourist experience to reinforcing environmental, social, and economic sustainability. It further identifies current limitations, including data fragmentation, digital skills gaps, lack of interoperability, and dependence on private platforms, and proposes future directions grounded in collaborative governance, standardisation, open architectures, and specialised training. Overall, tourism intelligence is presented not merely as a technical tool, but as an evidence-based governance mechanism capable of generating both public and private value in destinations striving for resilience and differentiation within an increasingly uncertain global environment.
