Abstract
Contemporary tourism operates in an environment defined by digital acceleration and increasing complexity in destination management. Within this context, tourism intelligence (TI) tools play a strategic role by enabling the transformation of a growing volume of data into actionable knowledge for planning, operational management, and real-time decision-making. This chapter offers a critical and applied analysis of the ecosystem of tools that constitute Tourism Intelligence Systems (TISs), organised around the data value cycle: collection, integration, analysis, visualisation, and decision support. It examines well-established technologies such as Extract–Transform–Load (ETL) processes, data warehouses, and business intelligence (BI) suites, alongside recent innovations related to artificial intelligence (AI), natural language processing (NLP), digital twins, and edge computing. The analysis emphasises that the value of these tools lies in their capacity to integrate into collaborative governance processes, overcome institutional barriers, and respond to real strategic challenges. It also highlights the main issues associated with data quality, interoperability, the training of specialised teams, and the ethical implications of algorithmic use. The chapter concludes by arguing that TIS should be understood as socio-technical ecosystems which, beyond merely accumulating data, contribute to anticipating risks, redistributing benefits, and advancing towards more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient tourism models.
