Abstract

The caloric intake of alcohol intake in consumers is underestimated, so its relationship with overweight and obesity is poorly understood. The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between alcohol consumption and overweight and obesity in adults in an Andean province and six amazonian provinces of Ecuador in 2021. Through a virtual survey disseminated through social networks that included: socioeconomic data; anthropometric and health data; physical activity; alcohol and tobacco consumption and dietary intake. A total of 309 surveys were obtained for statistical analysis. The R program version 4.0.1 was used and the Chi square test was used. It was found that alcohol consumption is related to overweight and obesity, in addition to this consumption is higher in adults of amazonian provinces than in the andean province. In conclusion, excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages such as: wine, beer and spirits are related to overweight and obesity, determined with Body Mass Index (BMI). Therefore, the consumption is an important aspect to consider to evaluate the nutritional status of the adult population.
