Abstract

Cervical cancer is the third in the world and the second in underdeveloped countries such as Ecuador. Intraepithelial lesions have increased, therefore, malignant lesions with increased mortality, being a health problem for which the Papanicolaou is considered ideal for its detection. A retrospective study with a quantitative approach was carried out using an observational, descriptive cross-sectional design. Where 451 medical records of patients who underwent the Pap test were analyzed, where 86.7% of the reports presented abnormalities such as: intraepithelial, inflammatory, infectious lesions and/ or atrophy; 6.9% were normal and 6.4% unsatisfactory for evaluation. Determining that the prevalence of intraepithelial lesions was 10.1%, representing 9.2% for squamous cell abnormalities and 0.9% for glandular cell abnormalities, all of which were reported as atypical glandular cells not otherwise specified (AGC-NOS), concluding that The prevalence of intraepithelial lesions is in correlation with studies reported in the literature, although it should be taken into account that there is a great deficiency in terms of taking cytological samples, so their prevalence could increase.
