Abstract
Parental skills, understood as the set of skills that mothers and fathers develop to accompany, guide, and educate their children, are essential for creating affective and formative environments that support child development. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between parental skills —specifically emotional-bonding and formative aspects—and sociodemographic factors such as age, educational level, and monthly income. The sample consisted of 417 mothers and fathers of children aged 6 to 7 years, enrolled in public and private schools in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador. A quantitative, non-experimental, correlational design was employed, using the Positive Parenting Scale (E20 v.2) as the primary instrument. The results did not reveal statistically significant correlations between the parental competencies assessed and the sociodemographic variables. However, differences were found based on the sex of the parent, with mothers reporting higher levels of both emotional-bonding and formative skills. Common parenting practices included the recognition of emotions and the promotion of environmental care. These findings suggest that beyond structural conditions, the quality of the parent–child bond and the intentionality of educational practices play a decisive role in children’s lives.
