Optimization Tool for Energy Management in Hybrid Storage Systems of Isolated Microgrids with Solar PV and Hydrokinetic Turbines

Abstract

The global transition towards sustainable energy systems has highlighted the importance of renewable resources. Remote Andean regions, particularly in Ecuador, face significant challenges in accessing reliable electricity due to harsh geographical conditions and isolation from the main power grid. This study investigates the integration of photovoltaic (PV) solar and submersible hydrokinetic turbine (HKT) generation systems with hybrid battery energy storage systems consisting of lithiumion and absorbent glass mat valve-regulated lead-acid batteries. An optimization tool is developed to manage these resources effectively, focusing on minimizing operational costs, maximizing renewable energy utilization, and prolonging battery lifespan by reducing charge/discharge cycles. The proposed tool is validated using actual production data from solar PV and HKT systems in the Andean region of Ecuador. The case study demonstrates the tool's capability to provide a reliable and sustainable electricity supply in remote communities.
