Abstract

Here, in the perspective of a bidirectional ductile end diaphragm concept, straight simply-supported multi-span bridges with Buckling Restrained Braces BRBs connecting spans to piers in the longitudinal direction are investigated to understand the behavior of such bridges. The limited studied addressed regular bridges were all spans and piers have the same properties along the bridge. A parametric study was conducted in such bridges designed based on elastic analysis, using nonlinear response history analysis to understand the influence of various parameters on seismic response. Overall, the use of BRBs was found to effectively limit the displacement demands in columns and expansion joint opening.
