Abstract

Latin America is one of the most violent regions in the world; statistics show an increase in the crimes committed daily in its countries, specifically in the case of Ecuador, crime rates are growing alarmingly accompanied by criminal recidivism, which hasbeen defined as the commission of a crime by a subject who has been convicted previously for one or more offenses. The objective of the research is to analyze the social determinants that affect the criminal recidivism of adult persons in conflict with the law of the medium security wards in the Azuay N°1 Liberty Deprivation Center in 2017-2020. The methodology used in the research was quantitative and qualitative; with a descriptive and explanatory scope; 121 Adult Persons in Conflict with the Law (APCL) recidivists selected through probabilistic sampling participated, and a questionnaire was applied to characterize the APCL. Later,a semi-structured interview was conducted todetermine the social factors influencingcriminal recidivism. The results of the investigation reflect the influence of different factors such as (34%) economic, (22%) community and context, (19%) family, (12%) work, (7%) education, and (6%) transgenerational; as for the main reasons for committing a crime, responses such as economicneed, low financial resources, obtaining easy money, among others, are associated. The results obtained will serve as inputs for decision-making regarding implementingprograms and projects aimed at preventing and reducing recidivism
