Abstract

This chapter takes you on a journey through the dynamic and evolving world of integrating electric vehicles into smart grids with renewable sources, focusing on how we can manage and control these systems more effectively and intelligently. The present study delves into the interaction among electric vehicles (EVs), the smart electrical grid, and renewable energy sources through a comprehensive analysis of pertinent cases. The primary focus is on integrating EVs as a significant load into the electrical grids of Ecuador. This integration is examined within the context of transitioning toward more sustainable and resilient energy systems. Considering EVs not only as transportation means but also as flexible energy resources, they possess the potential to act as stabilization agents and storage units within the electrical grid. Strategies are explored to manage energy demand and supply, maximizing the utilization of renewable sources while minimizing reliance on fossil fuels. Through detailed simulations, the impact of EV charging on the Ecuador grid is evaluated. Various charging scenarios, consumption patterns, and their effect on the local electrical infrastructure are studied. These analyses provide a detailed review of the technical and operational feasibility of integrating EVs into specific environments. The chapter also delves into the study of systems that can handle the variations in energy supply, and the role of smart grids that act like the nervous system of our energy body, keeping everything running smoothly and efficiently. The findings of this study emphasize the necessity for policies and strategies tailored to the infrastructure and local conditions. Furthermore, they underscore the importance of precise planning and efficient management to optimize the benefits of EVs in transitioning toward a more sustainable energy system driven by renewable sources.
