Abstract
The development of phonological awareness skills at an early
age is a fundamental predictor of learning to read and write. The present literature review
aimed at providing a general overview about the importance of the phonological awareness
development atan early age. In order to do this, relevant literature on phonological
awareness skills of children aged four-to six-year-old was collected, analyzed and
discussed. The results of correlational and intervention studies described indicate that the
stimulation and development of phonological awareness skills at an early age is positively
related to the learning of reading and writing.
