Abstract

Adolescent courtship sometimes shows a dominance of the couple due to a power struggle, a situation that gives rise to the use of coping strategies. This study sought to determine the presence of dating violence and the coping strategies used by adolescents from rural institutions in Cuenca canton. Instruments: Coping Strategies Inventory (CSI) and Dating Violence Questionnaire (CUVINO). A total of 133 students between the ages of 12 and 18 years participated; 52 were in a dating relationship. According to the results, 92.3% reported having experienced violence; of these, 50% suffered psychological violence. In addition, self-criticism and problem solving were found to be slightly positively related to coercion; likewise, age was found to be related to desiderative thinking and problem avoidance. It is concluded that psychological violence, in its different dimensions, is related to some coping strategies.
