Abstract
OBJECTIVE. To analyze the use of traditional medicine during the COVID-19 pandemic, exploring knowledge and beliefs, types of practices, and materials or plants used for prevention and treatment, as well as documented preventive or therapeutic experiences. METHOD. A qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive study based on a systematized narrative review published in recent years in high-impact journals. RESULTS. The analysis of 42 articles showed that beliefs and knowledge about traditional medicine significantly influenced the choice of complementary therapies, highlighting the use of medicinal plants, supplements, and cultural practices to mitigate the effects of COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS. Traditional medicine played a relevant role during the pandemic, both due to its cultural value and accessibility. However, the scientific evidence on its efficacy is heterogeneous and requires more rigorous studies.
