BEYOND THE WEST: MORPHOLOGY, HERMENEUTICS, AND SOCIAL NARRATIVES IN ANDEAN TEXTILE DESIGN

Research output: Contribution to journal › Article › peer-review

Abstract

The objective of this work is to identify, based on sociocultural contributions, Andean symbolism, worldview, and hermeneutics, using textile designs as a visual reference. It is necessary to reconsider creative processes based on Andean knowledge, seeking the richness of Amerindian being and knowledge, moving away from the current predominance of the Western approach to thought, and exploring the expressive-creative foundations resulting from complex abstractions of the components of Andean thought and design. The work was based on experiential ethnographic observations; a methodological
approach involving documentary research, specialized publications, and databases; and an exploratory approach. Upon completion of the research, it was possible to identify the symbolic and hermeneutic components and the Andean worldview based on its sociocultural structure. A graphic-compositional approach to Andean textile designs was established. The foundations of the design were developed based on its theoretical-practical construction, and a methodological proposal linking images to the Ecuadorian worldview was put forward.
