Abstract
The dependence on fossil fuels to generate electricity in Ecuador must be reduced to mitigate economic and environmental issues. Therefore, new alternatives are sought for energy generation and promote energy security. An alternative to feed the electrical demand is to introduce solar thermal technologies for power production. The objective of this research is to decipher adequate locations for power production through the placement of parabolic trough collectors (PTC). Appropriate sites will be identified in concordance with different requirements, through a multicriteria technique. Three potential places in the province of Azuay will be analyzed, and they will be characterized by their climate, geographical area, proximity to a power substation and water resources availability. The best location between the option was obtained, then multicriteria techniques were useful in solving problems in energy planning in the province of Azuay. These techniques allow sustainability according to existing resources in the area.
