Use of remote sensing for the development of tools for the management of natural resources of the Cajas National Park

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

The conservation and integrated management of the country's natural resources require, on the one hand, of serious and coordinated policies based on scientific knowledge, and on the other, of relevant environmental information that has been properly recorded. Normally, obtaining this information means an immense physical challenge in high mountain remote areas where very adverse climatic conditions prevail, as in the case of the Cajas National Park (PNC). It is necessary therefore to explore alternate methods that require a fraction of physical effort previously reviewed to estimate useful environmental variables for Andean regions. In this context, nowadays remote sensing allows them to obtain thematic information from images of remote sensors, in real time, on a large space scale and in remote areas, avoiding the application of classical methods that usually become complex by the extension and the remote of the area under study. Thus, the present study seeks to develop tools for the conservation and management of Natural Resources of the PNC, based on remote sensing methods. Specifically, it is proposed (i) to prepare a congruent and validated map of the boxes of the box of the boxes (MZC); (Ii) derive a methodology that serves to estimate maximum depths of the PNC lakes and apply it to other Andean lakes in the country; And (iii) study the possible relationship between the limnimetric characteristics of the PNC lakes such as their volume and area and the geomorphological characteristics of their contributing basins.
