Description

At present, 56% of the world's population resides in cities and despite the fact that urban areas only occupy about 2% of the earth's surface, are caused by 75% of the consumption of natural resources and 70% of greenhouse gas emissions. However, cities also offer the possibility of achieving sustainable objectives that improve everyone's life. These possibilities have led to an innumerable number of studies in large cities, leaving aside the so -called "intermediate cities", which have begun to generate urban problems such as the increase in the number of vulnerable neighborhoods, the increase in the cost of the land and the phenomenon of peri -urbanization, as is the case of the city of Cuenca in Ecuador. To address these issues, the evaluation of urban sustainability is used as a means to identify urban problems and strategies to improve them using an indicators framework. However, these indicators have the disadvantage that they are not applicable in all cities and spatial analysis in combination with other indicators are not possible. The objective of this research is, therefore, to develop a control table platform with indicators integrated in geographical information systems such as decisions support in urban planning processes. The methodological design of the research includes three phases: 1) Selection of a sustainable indicators framework, 2) Spatial evaluation of sustainable development indicators. 3) Development of a municipal control panel.
