SUNRISE Program: Main Study of 24-h movement behaviors among children under 5 years in Ecuador

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

This study is part of a global project, which will provide the first such data for the early years and help the global community move towards preventing young children from developing obesity and ensuring that they reach their developmental potential.

The proposed study includes a knowledge co-creation element where researchers from HIC will learn about conducting research in LMICs and where researchers in LMICs will be trained in collecting surveillance data on these behaviors.
Findings from this project, can be used for advocacy purposes to inform key stakeholders on the prevalence of these behaviors, including the relationship with obesity, potentially driving changes in policy in these age groups.

Objectives: The primary aim of this study is to determine the proportion of 3- and 4-year-old children in Ecuador who meet the WHO Guidelines for physical activity, sedentary and sleep behavior for children under 5 years of age. In addition, this study aims to determine if these proportions differ by sex, socioeconomic status, or urban/rural location between different levels of human and economic development. Secondary objectives include examining associations between meeting the WHO guidelines and indicators of health and development and identifying potential correlates of meeting the WHO Guidelines and of movement behaviors. Methods: The Project is a cross-sectional study.
