Silvopastoral Options for Climate Change Mitigation and Connectivity in Livestock Landscapes

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

As a result of the internal migration process in the period 1976-1983, the Ecuadorian Amazon region lost approximately 400000ha of forest/year, these being transformed into agricultural areas, with an increase of 5 million ha in 1954-1974 to 8 million for the year 1995. To prevent and reduce the deforestation and degradation of forests, different strategies have been implemented, including the creation of conservation areas Environmental services to private producers. Although the strategies implemented have managed to reduce deforestation, it is very likely that degradation processes will continue to occur in large areas under agricultural use. This, due to the management practices implemented in the region, which are characterized by poor tree coverage. The project seeks to) identify the main silvopastoral practices adopted in the region, b) know the impact of the possible adoption of silvopastoral practices and c) diagnose the policies of local governments and their role in the promotion of management practices that contribute to connectivity and mitigation to climate change in livestock landscapes. For this, field visits and surveys of local producers (A) will be carried out, modeling the impact of adoption of silvopastoral practices in the region (B) and a literature review of local policies (c) will be carried out. With the execution of this project, it is expected to know the opportunities for adopting silvopastoral systems in the region and the legal mechanisms that could be used for its promotion.
