Description
The "Pharmacological Characterization of Medicinal Plants of the South of Ecuador" is a research project that was formed within the Vlir Interuniversity Cooperation Program under the auspices of the Belgium Government. In the beginning, the project set the following general objectives: - Implement the infrastructure for phytochemistry research of medicinal plants. - Implement the research capacity in phytochemistry through the academic training of the work team. These objectives have already been covered because the project currently has five laboratories equipped in the areas of microbiology, phytochemical analysis, micro algae cultivation, analysis by using biological models: zebra fish and mouses. For research, medicinal plants used by the population and micro algae have been used using different collection criteria, initially only in the Ecuadorian Austro. After its processing, extraction and stabilization of extracts, some pharmacological activities such as antimicrobial (one of the largest morbidity rates in the region have been studied are gastrointestinal infections), anti -inflammatory, anticonvulsive. After a screening stage, interest extracts have been analyzed using Elisa, chromatography (HPLC) and biological models; Toxicity, etc. At the moment the project has been strengthened through new national and international financing sources through the formulation of new projects; Which has allowed the implementation of cutting -edge technology equipment that will complete the initial research by screling to the isolation and identification of the compounds responsible for pharmacological activities.
