Description

The other marginals of the city of Cuenca: Sociabilities and survival in the feminized spaces of the markets. The Arenal, October 9 and August 10, is a project that aims to explore, reflect and analyze the world of marginals that inhabit the most important markets in Cuenca, as social subjects that have made these places "inhabited spaces" from their social relationships. These relationships occur in condition of impoverishment, subordination, contempt and fear, characteristics that identify subjects with vulnerability, subordination and social exclusion. Despite this, this social sector has been able to build sociabilities and shared senses which has allowed them to survive economically and find "shelter" to their initial helplessness. Part of its survival is the product of a deployment of capacities that have to do with the so -called "service" or "mandad" work ", and that have generated a helpful attitude that benefits the interest of the market vendors, colloquially called the" godmothers ", women who constitute dominant people, while" protective ", which strengthens their hegemony in the markets. This being the panorama, we will investigate the character, contents and forms of relationship of this social sector (people with begging, addictions, sex work, and strugglers) with the public space of the market and their social actors, the vendors. In addition, the "degrees of vulnerability and subordination" of this social world will be identified as well as its level of resistance and persistence, from which it is possible to think of a social inclusion sheltered by public policies that incorporates them into the existence of the city and the exercise of their citizen rights. This research that will have a year long, is viable, because for its realization a strategic alliance has been established with the Municipality of Cuenca, an institution concerned with generating public policies for social sectors with greater vulnerability and priority care groups. This research will then give elements to improve the institutional processes of prevention, attention and care of the "other marginals of the city", such as academic knowledge about a very little investigated sector and supplies for local public policies.
