Identification of the impacts of the change of use the Earth on the hydrogeochemistry of Andean basins

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

Andean ecosystems, such as the high and cloudy mountain forest and moor, provide essential environmental services, including the most important are the conservation of biodiversity, carbon kidnapping, the regulation of the hydrological cycle and the provision of water of excellent quality for consumption for millions of people. Ecuador is the country with the highest area in relation to its territory covered with Páramo in South America, in the same way 42% of the country's area is forest. Unfortunately, these ecosystems hardly remain intact or naturally as a consequence mainly of the great direct anthropogenic pressure that has been supporting with activities such as deforestation, (a) Forestation, grazing, road construction, among others. Despite the socio-economic and environmental importance, knowledge related to the functioning of these Andean ecosystems in danger is scarce or not existing, which limits an adequate and effective sustainable management of them. These ecosystems remain poorly or not monitored, becoming the lack of high quality information in the most important limitation for adequate management and conservation. This is due to the existence of short series of hydrological data, empty in the databases, the poor quality of information and the lack of financing for research. This has caused a deep emptiness of knowledge about the functions and cycles hydrological, eco-hydrological and hydro-geese-chemicals of the Andean hydrographic basins. According to Boy et
