Description

According to preliminary reports for the United Nations Habitat III Congress, it is possible to indicate that the Ecuadorian city has a quantitative deficit in relation to the development of open public space (Ministry of Urban Development and Housing, 2015). On the other hand, and in the particular case of the cities of Quito, Cuenca and Ibarra it is possible to indicate that the problem in relation to this issue could fall on the equitable spatial distribution of this public good and in the lack of understanding of the potential EPA systems. Consequently, with the aforementioned, the main objective of the study is to establish and determine the amount of land designated as public space, its quality, distribution and accessibility levels in the three selected cities; Generating a comparative diagnosis between urban areas which would allow to generate a tool that would facilitate on the one hand the understanding of the potential public space systems in these cities and on the other, the decision making in relation to potential initiatives and projects to improve the quantitative deficit mentioned above. Finally, the research also intends to respond to the unknown in relation to possible EPA distribution patterns in these cities and their social, economic and environmental implications.
