Description

Emerging pollutants are compounds of different origin and chemical nature such as pharmaceutical products, pesticides, illicit drugs, personal toilet compounds and others. One of the characteristics of this group of pollutants is that they do not need to be constantly in the environment to cause negative effects. They can enter through different ways such as domestic or industrial wastewater, treatment of treatment plants, hospital effluents, among others. The main objective of this study is to determine whether there is the presence of active pharmaceutical ingredients in consumption water in four cities in Ecuador, and establish the health risks that this exposure could cause, if there is, and propose solutions to the problem. The samples will be taken directly from the distribution system of each city, in the main parishes; To obtain the results, techniques such as liquid chromatography to mass coupled (LC-MS) and liquid chromatography with diode arrangement detector (LC-SDAD) will be used. Given the lack of information in Ecuador, the proposed study would be a pioneer and generate information of interest to the scientific community and society. Being an issue that affects public health, a priority for agencies such as WHO and the European Union, it should also be addressed by public entities that regulate the distribution and control of consumption water in all cities in the country
