Description
The identification of typologies for the classification of population settlements that make up the cantonal territorial system is essential in the process of characterization and analysis of them, in this way it is possible to determine the function they perform in the cantonal territory and the interrelations that exist between them, especially in the territorial planning process and specifically in the elaboration of the development and territorial management plans. However, in countries like Ecuador, the heterogeneity of the territory, as well as the socio -economic particularities and of the physical environment make this task complex; Moreover, taking into account the high dispersion of the population in the territory and the limitations in terms of available information. Therefore, it is necessary to establish methodologies that facilitate this task and therefore, the elaboration of solid and congruent plans with the territory. Although there are numerous studies on classification of population settlements, few are those that address this issue from the point of view of territorial planning or explore tools that facilitate this task. The present work proposes to cover this lack by analyzing the variables that condition the structure and function of the Ecuadorian settlements through data mining techniques, so that qualifying variables are established that allow the greatest possible homogeneity within each group, and the greatest heterogeneity between different groups. The extracted knowledge will allow establishing the parameters for the automated classification and delimitation of population settlements in Ecuador both to operationalize the diagnostic phase and the proposal of the plans.
