Description
During the first decade of the present century the growth of Ecuador has been restored after a deep crisis in the late last decade, and as of 2007 the social investment and role of the State in the economy have been strengthened under a new development strategy. However, these advances are at risk due to the economic slowdown that the country experiences product of the fall in the price of oil and the appreciation of the dollar. In front of the complex panorama, Ecuador faces the challenge of maintaining the high levels of public investment, at the same time to strengthen the efficiency and progressivity of the State. Thus, the present project aims to explore the determinants of economic growth in Ecuador from the economic analysis of subnational data. Determining the importance of different economic, social and institutional factors in economic performance is essential to identify those areas to be intervened through adequate territorial policies, which can be crucial to promote economic growth. From the theoretical approach, reference is made to the theories of local economic growth, known as the "Economic Geography School" and endogenous growth theories that propose to consider the existence of heterogeneity and spatial dependence in regional growth specifications. This with a double objective: to obtain reliable results, and introduce the role of space in the study of economic growth, which cannot be ignored when designing policies with endogenous development approach that consider the presence of space spillovers.
