Cañaris, Saraguros and Shuar in the city of Cuenca: Territorialization processes and ethnic identity in urban contexts

The project that we present to the DIUC is an extension of the Prometheus project approved by the Senescyt, in order to establish and form a team that will actively participate in the development of the research, in the elaboration of the results and in the publications. In this way we intend to cover one of the central objectives of the promised projects, which is to contribute to articulate and form research groups, which have continuity beyond our presence in Ecuador, as established in the contract of the person responsible for the project with the Senescyt and of the agreements previously defined with the University of Cuenca (Faculty of Philosophy and Classroom of Human Rights). In the present investigation we propose to approach the processes of insertion of ethnic minorities in urban contexts. For this we have selected the Saraguro, Cañarí and Shuar that live permanently or temporarily in the city of Cuenca. The fundamental objective of the project is to analyze the process of insertion/territorial appropriation of groups with diverse cultural characteristics in urban socio -ecosystems. The methodology to be used will be fundamentally qualitative (ethnography, participant and direct observation, interviews with key informants, discussion forums, life stories).
