Description

This project aims to evaluate different platforms for the development of interactive digital television applications and propose methodological guides that lead in an easy and intuitive way the execution of design and implementation activities of this type of applications. For the design and implementation of interactive digital television applications, existing knowledge from software engineering methods can be applied. In the literature it can be identified that the process of development of interactive applications that make use of a Middleware, are based on essential information such as: i) the specific needs of a user, and ii) the application of the best practices and design guides for specific platforms. Unfortunately, for a new technology such as interactive digital television (TVDI), this information is still insufficient because there are very few applications and there is no experience and feedback from users. Therefore, developers of this type of software do not know the most appropriate methods and tools for the generation of these applications. Recognizing the need to establish good implementation practices, some researchers have begun to provide recommendations for the development of TVDI applications. However, most of the proposals do not have an empirical evidence of the solution. This work proposes the analysis and production of different models, methods, and techniques that can be adapted to the design and implementation of interactive applications. In addition, the programming environments proposed in the Ginga Middleware: a declarative called Ginga-Ncl (nested context Language) and another imperative, called Ginga-J (Java) will be analyzed. The possibility of these environments to enrich the interactivity process, through the combination with other development platforms, will also be analyzed. In both scenarios, use cases (with real applications) will be used that will allow evaluating the platforms studied.
