Hydroclimatic threat analysis and risk assessment in the PAUTE canton

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

The Paute canton, in the province of Azuay, faces multiple hydroclimatic threats such as landslides, floods, droughts and forest fires affect the population, ecosystems, and the infrastructure of the canton. Despite local efforts in risk management, there are gaps of knowledge about hydroclimatic threats, and their influence on the exposure and vulnerability of PAute's natural and human systems, which limits the effectiveness of adaptation and response measures. This project aims to analyze the main hydroclimatic threats of the PAUTE canton and subsequently submit them to a risk assessment, with exposure and vulnerability components of the natural and human systems of the Paute canton. Through the management of geospatial information of geomorphological, hydrological, climatic and socio -economic variables through geographic information systems (GIS) in combination with the analysis of multicriterium decisions (MCDA), with advanced weighting techniques such as the hierarchical analytical process (AHP), entropy among others, the different components of the threats and the different components of the threats will be identified and analyzed Risk Assessment. The results of these techniques will undergo a comparative analysis and will be validated with the documented historical events. In addition, the results are expected to provide a fundamental tool for territorial planning and risk management in PAute, generating cartography that allows identifying critical areas and facilitating decision -making for risk reduction. The project also seeks to strengthen local capabilities through knowledge transfer and provide recommendations to reduce risk.
